Built in 1937 by industrialist Charles Gunter. Charles Gunter was Town of Spruce Pine's first millionaire. He was the Mayor of the Town as well. He also built the other stone building on Oak Avenue called the Gunter Building. T he stonework was done by Dave Greene and Charlie Mitchell. The building remained in the Gunter family until 1976. This building housed offices for mining operations as well as a barber shop, a beauty shop, a restaurant known as "Happy Home Dinning Room", Doc White's Music Store, as well as a Tea Room on the top floor. It is part of the Historic Spruce Pine Downtown District and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building was completely gutted and the layout changed during a 1990's remodel. It contains 2 - 1 Bedroom/1Bath Apartments, 2 - 2 Bedroom/ 1 Bath Apartments, along with two retail/office stores on the ground level. The building has a four story elevator and has been extensively remodeled for upscale living.
