RESTORING A LANDMARK THE HISTORIC GUNTER BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN SPRUCE PINE
Located at 288 Oak Avenue, the Gunter Building is one of the most significant historic structures in Spruce Pine and is now entering an exciting new chapter through restoration and redevelopment.
Built in 1941, the building was constructed by Charles Smith Gunter, widely known as Spruce Pine’s first millionaire. It was built to house Belk’s Department Store after the original store burned on Locust Street. Today, it holds a unique distinction as the only building individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while also contributing to the Spruce Pine Downtown Historic District.
The building itself reflects the region’s industrial heritage. It was constructed using river tumbled biotite mica stone, a direct connection to the mineral resources that made this area nationally known.
Charles Smith Gunter, born in 1882 in Young Cove near Bakersville, was a transformative figure in both industry and civic life. He founded the English Mica Company in 1908 and pioneered an economical process for using scrap mica, particularly micaceous biotite, in industrial applications. His innovations supplied materials used across the United States in rubber, paint, roofing, and paper products.
Beyond his industrial impact, Gunter was deeply involved in public service. He served as either an alderman or mayor of Spruce Pine from 1923 until 1961. During this time, the town evolved from a small village into a thriving industrial community. He played a key role in major infrastructure improvements, including water systems, reservoirs, sewer systems, paved streets, and expanded municipal services.
Gunter was also responsible for the construction of numerous commercial buildings and homes throughout town, contributing to the economic growth and stability of the community. He remained active in business and civic affairs until his death in 1961.
Today, the Gunter Building is being carefully restored and redeveloped for modern use while preserving its historical integrity. The property is owned by Oak and Topaz LLC and managed by Scotland Property Group LLC. The general contractor for the project is Delta Construction Services and Management LLC.
The redevelopment will include four residential apartments and a destination restaurant space in the heart of downtown Spruce Pine. The project is expected to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027.
Restaurant operators interested in this location are encouraged to contact Mike Vance with Scotland Property Group LLC.
This project represents more than the restoration of a historic building. It is an opportunity to honor the legacy of Charles Gunter while bringing new energy, housing, and economic investment to downtown Spruce Pine.
